This is the 2011 Bmw X3, the successor of the popular compact crossover, which will add a new dimension to the pleasure of driving a Sports Activity Vehicle of this class.
As you can see from the photos, the new crossover comes with a redesigned front end, showing a more aggressive design, a powerful-looking front apron, new headlights and fog lamps which are positioned far towards the outside. The new X3 shows an unique interpretation of the typical BMW X design features: the flared wheel arches as well as the short distance between the front axle and the instrument panel are an indication that we are looking at a vehicle which uses four-wheel drive technology and emphasise the robust character of the Sports Activity Vehicle.
The rear end is clearly inspired by its bigger brother, the 2011 X5, showing new taillights located far to the outside. Inside, we find what we wanted and what all the crossover should include: premium ambience and intelligent functionality. The new control display of the optional operating system BMW iDrive is harmoniously integrated into the instrument panel, the driver orientation is emphasised by the asymmetrically designed centre console and the three rear seats offer outstanding comfort for travelling long distances. Also, the new X3 comes features an 8.8-inch high-resolution screen of the Professional navigation system, apparently the largest on-board monitor in its segment. The new X3 has a volume of between 550 and 1,600 litres: this means the luggage compartment is the best in its segment.
Under the hood, we find a choice of two engines: a four cylinder diesel and straight six-cylinder petrol engine. The new four-cylinder diesel engine found on the X3 xDrive20d, delivers 135 kW/184 hp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 380 Nm between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. This means that the car can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). Average fuel consumption is 5.6 litres/100 km while CO2 emission level is 149 grams per kilometer.
The 3.0-liter straight six-cylinder petrol engine found on the X3 xDrive35i, delivers 225 kW/306 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm being available at 1,300 rpm. The car can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 245 km/h (152 mph). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 8.8 litres/100 km and the CO2 emission level is 204 grams per kilometer.
The X3 xDrive35i is equipped as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the xDrive20d is offered with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. Premiere for Auto Start Stop function in conjunction with automatic transmission. When stopping at road junctions or in a traffic jam, the engine is automatically switched off. As soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the brake pedal, the engine restarts. If the Auto Hold function is activated, brief pressure on the accelerator pedal is sufficient. Furthermore, the car includes brake energy regeneration, EPS Electric Power Steering, demand controlled ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and tyres with reduced rolling resistance contribute towards lowerin fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels.
Dynamic Damper Control is optionally available for the new X3, which means that the driver can adapt its dampers to its style of driving. According to the manufacturer, the driver can choose between the “NORMAL”, “SPORT” and “SPORT+” modes using a button on the centre console.
If you want even more, the choice of optional features ranges from automatic climate control with 2-zone control, a panorama sunroof, high-end audio equipment and the navigation system Professional with hard-disk storage, to automatic rear lid operation and a tow coupling with electronically pivoting ball head. The new BMW X3 can be equipped, inter alia, with the systems Head-up Display, Adaptive Cornering Headlights, High-beam Assistant, Cruise Control with braking function (standard on the BMW X3 xDrive35i) and reversing camera including Top View.
