Production of the elongated version of BMW 3-Series and the BMW X1 model in BMW Brilliance’s second plant is about to begin, according to Qi Yumin, chairman of Brilliance Auto Group, who was at the ground-breaking ceremony of the new plant last June 2.
This new plant, which costs 560 million euros ($688 million), is located in Shenyang city, northeast China’s Liaoning province. Meanwhile, the old plant of BMW Brilliance will continue to build the elongated version of BMW 5 Series and the BMW 3 Series. Qi disclosed that the company will produce an engine factory near the new plant. Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the BMW Group, said that the new plant will have an annual capacity of 100,000 units when construction is completed in 2012. In the long term, the combined annual capacity of the venture’s two plants in China is expected to hit 300,000 units. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Chen Zhenggao, Governor of Liaoning Province, revealed his anticipation that BMW Brilliance will import the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 7 Series into China too. But Qi had been quick to respond that this issue is still being discussed. He said that as soon as the capacity is expanded, models made by BMW Brilliance will meet the domestic demand and will be exported as well.
