Ford recalling 575,000 Windstar minivans in the U.S. and Canada

2003 Ford WindstarFord announced today that it is recalling 575,000 Windstar minivans in the U.S. and Canada due to the fact that the rear axles of the vehicles may corrode and break.

The affected modes are 1998 to 2003 model-year Windstars in the areas where road salt is used in cold weather, according to Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “After many years of vehicle service in these areas, corrosion can weaken the rear axle, making it susceptible to torsional stress,” Ford said in a report posted on NHTSA’s site. Apparently, about 950 complaints alleging cracking in the rear axle were received by NHTSA and seven accidents causing three injuries were reported.
