Electric-car maker Tesla Motors Inc. and Toyota Motor Corp. have recently signed a deal to begin development of an electric version of the RAV4 compact sport-utility vehicle that is expected to start selling in 2012.
Tesla, which just went public with its stock, has produced a prototype that is currently being tested. Tesla intends to deliver more units this year. Last May, CEO Akio Toyoda of Toyota and Elon Musk of Tesla gave details about this partnership that includes Toyota purchasing a $50 million stake in the electric-car company and selling it an assembly plant in Fremont, Calif. On July 10, Tesla said that it will send two prototype vehicles to Toyota; however it declined to identify the models. According to a source, Toyota also aims to test an electric Corolla compact sedan but the RAV4 is better suited to the weight of Tesla’s battery pack. This source added that companies could also develop an electric Lexus RX luxury SUV.
