The sales and production of eight vehicles will be stopped while Toyota Motor Co. seeks a fix to the issue on sticking accelerator pedals that led to the massive vehicle recall.
Sales are ordered suspended by Toyota Motor Sales USA and output will be stopped for the week of Feb. 1 at two plants in Indiana, and one each in Texas, Kentucky and Canada. The nation’s top-selling car, the Toyota Camry, is included in those vehicles that are suspended. In a statement, Toyota Division General Manager Bob Carter said, “Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company.” He called this move as necessary until a remedy is finalized. The recall last week involved 2.3 million vehicles and was related to defects with a pedal mechanism. Toyota’s reputation is smeared further after having announced the recall of 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
That action focused on pedals jammed by floor mats, causing unintended acceleration. Ernie Boch, owner of Boch Toyota in Norwood, Mass., and the nation’s second-largest Toyota dealer, called the move to be “horrible” but he countered that by saying that he thinks Toyota is doing the right thing.
Boch added that he has some customers that won’t take delivery of a car until the defect is fixed; hence, if this stretches out too long, it would be “devastating.”In addition to the 2007-10 Camry, the vehicles affected by the latest action are the 2005-10 Avalon; 2007-10 Tundra; 2008-10 Sequoia; 2009-10 RAV4, Corolla and Matrix; and 2010 Highlander.
