A brief history of everything [Top Car Blogger]

Trends are a funny thing, this weird circular progression, that at 29 years old, I am starting to see repeat. Oakley Frogskin glasses – I think I threw mine away in 1994, now they are a hipster’s dream. More »

  1. @Metalface Eagle: I actually like Jersey Shore. . .the situation cracks my shit up.

  2. @suprafly: Excellent point. Very few know how to use those. Honestly, I’m not sure. They don’t teach semicolon use in schools any longer. Apostrophes they do though, or at least did when and where I was in school.

  3. @gman1023: And the semicolon. Nitpicky, I know, but really, does anyone use them correctly?

  4. @MrBeetle: Nice!

  5. While it was an okay article, it was definitely not what I want to see on Jalop. You’ve got the know-how and the voice, but the humor was lacking, and the focus was scattered at best.

  6. I’m not pleased about what the Super Fast and Furious Sesame Street lifestyle has done with young impressionable minds either, OP.

I also rage a bit when I see any of Scion’s heavily ironic “united by individuality” advertisements. You are not your fucking khakis, etc… and also because kids don’t learn anything by by having the dealership install a billet shift knob and axle back exhaust for them. In most cases it would seem enthusiasts these days fancy themselves an ASE certified mechanic and the operator of a bonafide race car just because they figured out how to install a BOV on their dad’s hand me down 1.8t (and by the way, that fluttering sound isn’t cool; it’s the bov not working, you fucking dc shoes and whitehat wearing, monster energy drink self poisoning, collar poppig, jersey shore is a good show broceratops imbecile).

in regards to not being the things you wear, though… I rather hypocritically admit that i get off a bit on walking into starbucks to get a $4 cup of shitty coffee while still wearing all the grime, cuts, and ground-into-the-floor clothing while going out for a victory spin after having a quarter hour earlier completed some maintenance or modification that probably took 3 times as long as I originally thought it would take to do.

    tl;dr: that shit is piss.

  7. So jealous… I love 90′s jap cars, and the US always got the watered down versions…

  8. @uzter54: I’ve got one of those. I like it, but it’s my just beater that won’t die. I’d much rather have a WRX or Mazdaspeed3. They’re pretty pricey, but you get what you pay for.

On the cheap side there’s also the Mazda3 / Protege.

  9. Good content, shitty writing. Paragraphs and proper punctuation are your friends, get to know them.

  11. aww.. mind sending some of those rare JDM cars over here to the states? or any JDM cars for that matter? i wouldnt mind a 70s J-market fairlady Z…

  12. @TTownTerrorist: Yep, to us Australians as well.

  13. Good read, ended a bit abruptly, though. I went on to look at a bunch of NZ D1 vids. Fun stuff. :)

  14. HOLY CRAP!

This is spooky, I’m in Auckland and drive a White V3 Subaru Impreza Sti with black wheels.

You’ve got my vote, just for the familiarity.

    Firenza – going JDM, y0!

  15. Interesting subject matter! Nice article man

    iancoleTX

  16. Well-written.

  17. Interesting article, but the title is driving me crazy. Please capitalize it properly.

  18. About half of my vendorship are Kiwi products eg:

    Kelford Camshafts

  19. Good read, but not sure if its quite up to the Jalopnik humor/snark standards. Try editing a separate version when you’re completely drunk and re-read sober to see how it went.

I hope you see the above as constructive criticism, I don’t mean to be harsh. Congrats on being published either way!

    IN THE FACE!

  20. @Roberto G.: Nicely said. I was all for Ms. Motor before she started showing up with articles not relating to cars.

    gman1023

  21. Interesting topic, interesting perspective. Like most people today you need to learn what an apostrophe is and is not for if you’re going to write professionally.

    gman1023

  22. An enjoyable read and a great perspective from down under.

    Romeo Vanegas

  23. @Roberto G.: That’s some of the best Jalopnik criticism I’ve read, he doesn’t write like a Fifth Gear poster boy/girl

    Dewoitine

  24. @MikeHTiger:
    3dr hatchback
    sub $2000
    1996 and up

the above three criteria knock out almost everything except the VW golf/rabbit which I was warned to avoid due to reliability issues when they get older and expansieve parts

    uzter54

  25. Excellent Read! .I agree Fast and the Furious just pooped over what car nuts really are about.

    Shark249

  26. amazing, i could see myself enjoying your articles in the future

  27. @Roberto G.: Hahahaha. That’s cold. I love it.

  32. @uzter54: Pontiac Vibe
    Scion XD
    Toyota Matrix
    Volkswagon golf
    Mini
    Etc….

  36. Fantastic.

  37. I remember the 1999 Nationals. I went with the GGON car club (Gtir / (Mazda) GTR Owners Network.
And we were stoked to see a beast of a Purple GTiR win the event with a staggering 12 seconds pass :P
He narrowly bet Reece McGregor in his R33 GTR, which has since changed chassis’ and has gone on to become the fastest GTR in the world (Heat Treatments GTR) .

    sirnicolai

  38. I think every legitimate gear head blames that movie for ruining otherwise good local car scenes.

    Matt White

  39. So it’s all YOUR fault!?!
Hey, I loves me some kiwis but if I can hang blame for fart cans and ‘stance’ on you guys I’ll do it…

    Lahjik

  40. This is a good article. The F&F ruined the import scene. Even today, if you go to Japan, you will find more FD RX-7 Shuto racers sporting suits, and jazz, then “Lil Wayne” and “G Unit”.

Tuning is an art in NZ, Australia, and Japan. Elsewhere in the world, it’s simply emulated.

    Steve Neill

  41. New Zealand is simply Australia’s little brother to us

    TTownTerrorist

  42. Loved it. +1 or whatever xD

    equinox92

  43. Picked up my first copy of “New Zealand Performance Car” magazine in the mid-90s as a visiting teen, which is a true reflection of the foregoing.

Seeing the JDM stuff all over the place was car-mind-overload for this young hoon.

    Interesting and informative article.

    DeadinSide Inc.

  44. agreed
the movie the fast and the furious made finding and purchasing my car nearly impossible
    I had three/four things I wanted
    1. manual
    2. 3dr hatchback
    3. stock or as near to as I can get
    4. $2000 (+/- $500)

turns out there is only 3 auto makers that have produced a hatchback since 1996
    ford focus zx3
    hyundai accent
    honda civic

I test drove a few ford focus zx3′s and they seem to all have the same throttle body/fuel injector issue

I have a flat out rule to never buy a pre-2005ish hyundai product

honda civics are priced insanely high for 10+ year old sub-compact so I didn’t even try for them, until I spotted one with a $3000 OBO on it so I said let me go and try and bargain him down a bit and well now I am happily driving a Black honda civic DX hatch 5spd that was within my budget

(replaced the cheap aftermarket rims with glossy black steelys to match the car)

  45. I enjoyed the article, sometimes it seems like other countries get all the good cars. But the funny thing is that people in other countries drool over “ADM” U.S. parts and cars too.

Unfortunately the contest is only open to Americans.

    yoda2

  46. Great article; however, do note that “Jap” is considered derogatory and racist in some circles. I would love to see a follow up article, documentary style (pics and video or it didn’t happen!) on the auto scene in Kiwi-land.

    NewbiusMaximus

  47. Nice article. I definitely am incredibly jealous of you’re easy access JDM rides.

    DooDaBeeDooBaa

  48. Good. 10+. I’d trade this Kiwi Gentleman with Ms. Motor now, no regrets.

    Roberto G.

  49. I enjoyed that. Didn’t know much about NZ car culture til now.
