What is the coolest vehicle crossing the auction block at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale? [Question Of The Weekend]

The third week in January means wealthy car collectors from around the world flock to Arizona for a week of car auctions, the most notable of which is Barrett-Jackson’s massive 6 day auction in Scottsdale. Chances are if you’re reading this the closest you are getting to the 1000+ car event is watching it on television (or on the free live-stream here) but that doesn’t mean we can’t drool over the amazing lineup of cars from the comfort of home. 3. There are a lot of cars on this list that I would absolutely love to have. A whole plethora of older 911s and Ferraris that make me salivate. But this has been my favorite car since I was 10 years old. So if I can only have one, 1967 Corvette convertible in black it is.

  4. IMHO either lot# 5010.3 special edition Lamborghini Diablo or the 1947 Bentley Mark VI (lot# 5005) I mean just look at that thing

  5. The 57 Mopars were such fragrant turds that they killed the demand for 58 Mopars like this one (on top of the ’58 recession that reduced demand in general and for non-economy cars in particular).

  6. +1!

  7. B-J sells cheaper cars. A nice Wagoneer is worth $10K and up. IIRC, that’s one of several cars from the same consignor, so maybe B-J would sell that car as a courtesy and turn down an individual who just wanted to sell a Wagoneer.

  40. Went to a car show back in 2004. Parked next to me was a ’57 Adventurer convertible. The paint and interior were in awful condition. The car was otherwise solid. The kicker was this: the original 325 V-8 went bad and the young kid who owned the car had sourced and installed a 392 hemi. I did everything I could to try to get him to sell, but it was his baby and he refused. I gave him my contact info. Never heard from him.

  41. Lot #1277. Boydster II. When I saw it last Sunday, of all the cars I saw, I thought that Dupont Brazillian Rage Red paint was the best paint job I’ve ever seen. A perfect example of how exquisite simple can look.

  44. My parents had a 55 Chevy Wagon [not a Nomad] and when they got a 57 Plymouth Fury I was become the big kid in the neighborhood. That 57 DeSoto looked in the auction looks good, but I never knew anyone who owned a DeSoto of any kind. Nonetheless, I’m with you. There are so many “cool” cars I would need at least three or four of them.

  53. There is only one question that you need to ask yourself in order to determine if a car is “cool”: “Imagine that your entire family has been murdered, and you need to pick a car to serve as a means of transportation while you travel the country avenging the deaths of your loved ones. Would you pick this car?” Alternatively, in order to determine which car is the coolest, just ask yourself “which car would I most like to use, choosing from among a selection of well-qualified vehicles?”

Picking from among those vehicles recently offered for sale, I would have to pick the 1961 Pontiac Catalina. Nothing says “I’m cool as a cucumber and will destroy you” more clearly than this car. If you have another car that better serves this role, please let me know.

  55. Ouch!!! All these non-muscle cars are taking a beating. I guess that Barrett Jackson made their bed and now they are sleeping in it. It looks like Barrett Jackson made a concerted effort to actually try to bring some worthwhile cars to their auction, but appears that all the buyers for these cars are at the other auctions.

  58. That ’73 RSR tribute car may not handle nearly as well as an actual ’73 RSR since it’s built on a ’90 C4 chassis and still has the AWD. My dad used to auto-x and solo2 a 1990 C4 and it understeered badly because they hadn’t sorted out the AWD. If you’re going to make a ’73 RSR tribute it has to be RWD.

  92. That one (not authentic) was sold anyway and this actual JFK Hearse was used in Texas.

    87CE 95PV Type Я

  93. Different one. This is the Cadillac that carried him in Dallas. It was a Pontiac that picked him up in Washington that was fake.

    DannyBN

  94. It’s claimed to be the hearse used in Dallas, not at the DC end. AFAIK, there isn’t much question about it.

    Ralph Wiley

  95. That would be awesome, but it does fold into a semi trailer and can be winched right up to any big rig IIRC.

    typhoon5000

  96. CNN is reporting that the JFK hearse is up for auction, isn’t that the same one that stirred up the hornet’s nest here and was determined not to be authentic?

    Because Racecar.

    Oswaldo Rodríguez

  115. I am trying to find the vehicle in there that will piss off the maximum number of people if I daily drive it instead of keeping it in a climate controlled room.

There are some bad looking vehicles in there, like the SEMA Ford Edge, yuckie!

Shit like this pisses me off to high Heaven. “Unrestored with one repaint” does not mean unrestored and I probably would not touch it.

Overall Barrett Jackons comes off to me as overly restored and over expensive vehicles that have lost my interest. Sure it is good to preserve some vehicles, but not every vehicle needs a rotisserie restoration. I will admit the 1956 Packard 400 looks wonderful and i wonder if you can pull off that du-color paint scheme with a modern car?

Sure the Cord 810 looks stellar as does the 46 Chevy from Council Idaho, but I like Shaq Daddy and the Boston Celtics so would love to rock this Express though the rims are not exactly my thing. I gave up trying to find the vehicle I was originally looking for.
