I think they’re putting a Sykactive gasoline engine in that, but it supposedly has diesel-like efficiency. Even if you went with a VW, as long as you didn’t get the Jetta, you’d be getting a good car.

If your car has an OBDII port, it doesn’t yet qualify for beater status. Close, but not quite.
My ’95 W124, I consider a luxury beater. There are other things to take into consideration besides age, but that’s a top one.
For example, the 2002 Chevy Cavalier was a beater when new.

Yeah, unfortunately the Jetta is the most popular VW in the states and it’s Mexico made. Oddly, the Passat, which until recently was also made there, hasn’t had half the problems that the Jetta had, from what I’ve seen. For whatever reason, the Jetta has just not been made as well as the rest of the cars. Socialvegetable on here, has the same year Jetta as the Rabbit (MkV Golf in Europe) that I have. His has been nothing but trouble and mine has been relatively problem free.

Well, I also think it has to do with better parts and assembly, not to mention easy to fix (or at least in the economy vehicle side) and the availability of parts which can be either used or new.
Lets see, my 1st car is 21 years old, my second is 7 years so I would am definitely contributing to the middle and the lower part of the bell curve.
Reverse; Mazda Bringing Skyactiv Diesel To U.S. — Right Move? (Yes)
This is great news, I hope things go well with Mazda and their Diesel drivetrain because I even though Hybrids and electrics might be the future, they still cannot stand against the internal combustion engine in terms of reliability and availability of fuel. Also, subjecting people to change so drastically, might be a bad idea so the using the diesel as a stepping stone to better fuel mileage might be the right move.

1st gear – Aren’t all the new cars useless hunks of metal and electronics upon delivery? Really, I think the reason is just because people are poor, and can’t trade up to the newest model as frequently.
Honestly, I’m terrified of what a new car these days will be like in 10 years… They’re just giant rolling electronic disasters waiting to happen.

We never got Mexican VWs in large quantities here, but despite being a French car nut I do have to admit VW is overrepresented among older cars I see on the road here. Even beating the Japanese, although those are exported to Africa on a large scale (just like Peugeots). I surely see more Golf mk4s on the road daily than all its Japanese competitors combined. American cars 10+ years old are unicorns here.
