LOS ANGELES — The 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future, the 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 from Bullitt and even the 1959 Cadillac ambulance from Ghostbusters may serve as the inspiration for the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge. Competitors will zero in on designing Hollywood’s hottest new movie car, show organizers announced on Wednesday.
Competing designers hail from General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz U.S. and Smart.
Of course, cars continue to be scene-stealers in the movies and TV, from the Mini Cooper S in The Italian Job to the 1974 Dodge Monaco in The Blues Brothers and the General Lee in The Dukes of Hazzard.
The entries will be judged on how the vehicle reflects its brand attributes relative to the plot; how the vehicle relates to the targeted audience or brand; level of imagination; character development of the vehicle; and uniqueness of the combination of story, car and character, according to show organizers.
Entries will be judged by top auto designers, including Tom Matano, director of Industrial Design at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University; Imre Molnar, dean of Detroit’s College for Creative Studies and Stewart Reed, chairman of Transportation Design at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design. There will also be a special, as-yet-unnamed judge with expertise in movie cars from Pixar Animation Studios, the creators of Cars.
The winning design will be announced on November 17.
Inside Line says: We may see a futuristic Batmobile or a new Road Warrior coming out of this new contest.
