FOUNTAIN VALLEY, California — When the 2012 Hyundai Equus goes on sale in September, it will not come with a free Apple iPad in the glove box. But the digital tablet will still be available on remaining units of the 2011 Equus.

“With millions of people having iPads in their possession, it was time to make this move,” James P. Trainor, Hyundai Motor America spokesman, told Inside Line on Friday. “All along, it was going to be a gift for first-year buyers. Almost a year ago when we were launching the Equus, it was difficult to get an iPad. You could buy an Equus and get one. That added to the innovation behind it.”

Hyundai gave away approximately 2,000 $500 base iPads with the launch of its full-size luxury sedan.

The Equus owners manual was loaded onto the iPad, in addition to being available in paper form in the vehicle. Trainor said that “you can still go into an iTunes store and download the owner guide from Equus onto your device.”

Trainor said that Hyundai has no plans to do other tie-ins with Apple on upcoming launches, including the launch of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster.

Inside Line says: If you’re determined to get that Apple iPad, you’ll have to settle for a 2011 Hyundai Equus.
