MARANELLO, Italy — Ferrari on Friday introduced the F2012, the latest in a series of 58 racecars purpose-built by Maranello for Formula 1.
As with its competitors, the changes on Ferrari’s F1 racecar are mostly evolutionary. “Practically every area of the car has been fundamentally revised,” Ferrari said — but the basic design doesn’t look dramatically different from last year’s car.
With the new car, which carries the internal designation 663, Ferrari said its principal focus was in three areas: the height of the front section of the chassis, the position of the exhaust pipes and the mapping for the electronic engine management.
Ferrari said it has made changes to the car’s suspension, notably in front, as well as to the aerodynamics, including revised front and rear wings. It said it will focus much of its pre-season track testing and development on refining those areas.
Outside of remapping the electronics, changes to last year’s engine are said to be minimal.
Ferrari continues to work with suppliers such as Brembo, Pirelli and Shell to refine its F1 racecar in such critical areas as brakes, tires and fuel.
Inside Line says: Who knows? Maybe the stepped-nose look will grow on people.
