TORRANCE, California — The Honda Heritage Clothing Collection, which honors such vehicles as the 1974 Honda Civic, launched on Thursday, as the Japanese automaker joins a growing number of automakers dabbling in the fashion business. The clothing line’s debut appears timed to coincide with the launch of the updated 2012 Honda Civic, which is set for a U.S. introduction this spring.
The new Honda clothing line can be purchased at lockerloop.com. It includes retro-inspired t-shirts, including one with an image of the 1974 Honda Civic and another with a logo from Honda’s first U.S. store in Los Angeles. The Civic t-shirt costs $31.50. The collection “consists of iconic Honda apparel designs from the early 1970s and action sportswear of the 1980s,” said Honda in a statement.
Honda will flesh out its fashion line in late spring, adding such items as café racer leather jackets, nylon racing jackets, windbreakers, vests and casual wear. Honda featured a line of clothing decades ago when it first started doing business here.
Just a week ago, Lotus launched a clothing line that includes fine leather goods.
Honda is launching its U.S. clothing line at a time when its U.S. sales rose 6.9 percent to 1.23 million units in 2010. However, it lost market share to Ford and Hyundai last year. Spin-off businesses such as clothing lines are often seen as a way for automakers to build stronger ties with consumers who are increasingly disloyal to many brands.
The world debut of the 2012 Civic was held last month at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.
