Toyota Pedal Recall Update #5: Recall Hits China

BEIJING — Toyota’s growing worldwide problem over defective accelerator pedals spread to China on Thursday, according to a statement released on Thursday by Toyota China.

Toyota will recall 75,552 RAV4 vehicles due to faulty accelerator pedals. The recall will apply to RAV4 vehicles made from March 19, 2009, through January 25, 2010, by Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor, Toyota’s joint venture with China FAW Group.

Owners are asked to contact the Toyota Customer Service Hotline at 800-810-1210 for more information or log onto the China State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine Web site or the China Auto Recall Network.

The scope and size of Toyota’s recall have grown dramatically in a short time, raising concerns about precisely how many of its vehicles around the world are equipped with the faulty accelerator pedals. It is unknown at this point just how many other countries — including Toyota’s home market in Japan — will be affected by the growing recall.

Inside Line says: Three of Toyota’s biggest markets outside of Japan — the U.S., Europe and China — are hit by this growing recall. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
