
BMW Design went on to clinch distinctions for six models from the BMW group. Among the winners were the new 6 Series in both coupe and convertible forms, the 1 Series M Coupe, the BMW ActiveE and two BMW motorcycle models.
Founded in 1950 in Chicago, the GOOD DESIGNTM Awards has been around for more than 60 years, and is highly regarded in the field of product design. The awards aim to increase public awareness of contemporary designs, together with sustainability issues.
A panel of independent design experts and architects appraise the designs based on functionality and aesthetics criteria, and is recently joined by a new ecological aspect which judges the sustainability of product in keeping up with the times. More than 500 entries from 38 countries were received for the 2011 awards.
Previously, BMW Design has received the award for a number of its models, including the 5 Series, MINI Countryman, BMW X5 and BMW Concept 6 design study.
