Ford to pack force-fed 1.0 litre into new Focus

EcoBoost: Ford’s recipe to fuel-saving and ultra-efficient engines. The company has announced a 1.0 litre three-cylinder version to be fitted into the 2012 Focus range. Similar to the earlier versions with higher displacements, these engines will feature direct-injection and force-induction technologies.

The engines will be available in two variants – a 123hp version for the five-door focus, and a lesser brethren delivering 99hp. Both engines are class-leading in terms of fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions.

Graham Hoare, European executive powertrain director commented, ”This is the third addition to our acclaimed EcoBoost engine family.  Joining the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost engines which span 150PS to 240PS, this 1.0-litre EcoBoost signals a new era of downsized, super frugal engines for the sub-130PS segment.  During development our UK engineers focused on improving thermal efficiency and reducing friction of the engine’s internal moving parts, especially during warm-up.”

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost also has the highest power density of any Ford’s production engine, delivering similar power to the previous gen 1.6-litre unit, and better drivability thanks to the improved torque figures, now on tap between 1,400 and 4,500 engine revs.
