The news was confirmed by Dr. Ernst Linder, who was the technical chief of the Volkswagen Polo GTI. Linder said that the upcoming Audi S1 will have a 1.4-litre twin-charged engine that produces 182bhp. Linder also confirmed that the S1 will have a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the front wheels, discounting the possibility of a Quattro version.
Linder also mentioned that Volkswagen is currently working on an R version of the Golf-based Jetta sedan. Linder did not reveal much detail, but the Jetta R is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 265bhp and 349Nm of torque.
Finally, Linder put to rest the rumours of a possible Polo R performance hatch. He said, “From the technical point-of-view, of course we can do something, but from the financial point-of-view it makes not so much sense. It (the Polo R) would be too expensive and we have the S1.”
