New Car Road Test: Mercedes-Benz C200 CGI

Price and equipment

It wasn’t long ago that entry-level Mercedes sedans were undernourished on the equipment front but thankfully they now live up a lot more to the luxury expectations. Standard gear includes dual-zone airconditioning, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, a tyre pressure warning system, partially electric front seats, cruise control, a first-aid kit and a trip computer neatly housed in the centre of the speedo and controlled by buttons on the steering wheel. The 17-inch alloy wheels are also aptly stylish.

There’s a colour screen hidden behind a plastic door on the dash, although it’s relatively small and lacking the latest graphics.

There’s only a space-saver spare but safety is otherwise taken care of with nine airbags (dual front, side curtain, side thorax for each door and a driver’s knee airbag) as well as stability control, to control a slide. Mercedes’ Pre-Safe system readies seatbelts and windows for a crash and the seatbelts pull tight when first clicked into place. Adjustable head rests and lap-sash belts for all five seats are also worthy of a mention.

It’s not all good news, though, with fake leather in lieu of the made-from-cow stuff. While most people won’t notice – the grain and finish mimics leather – some would say there’s an expectation that a luxury car is fitted with such niceties. The foot-operated park brake is also a bit archaic, albeit succeeding in freeing up space around the gear selector.

Once you opt for the more powerful C250 CGI, the appointments are more generous thanks to the standard fitment of the Avantgarde kit that’s also available as an option on the C200 CGI tested here. Additions include leather trim, a larger colour screen that retracts automatically, a rear armrest, extra splashes of chrome and black gloss, and larger, 18-inch alloy wheels.
