New Car Road Test: Subaru Impreza WRX

Price and equipment

Plenty of attention – and not always of the wanted kind. The WRX has always been one of the most likely cars to provoke other drivers into trying to challenge you to a street duel, and the more conspicuous bodywork is only likely to attract more antagonists. Our car also endured some “vandalism” when some cheeky sod(s) pushed a side mirror back and lifted the wiper blades up.

As well as adopting the STI’s wider and more aggressive body (though not the sedan’s mammoth rear wing), the WRX doubles its tailpipe count to four by borrowing the Subaru Tecnica International edition’s exhaust set-up.

The 17-inch tyres now wrap around lighter alloy wheels finished in gun-metal grey, while Bluetooth has been added to carry-over standard features that also include bi-xenon headlights, foglights, climate control, cruise control and 10-speaker audio.

Buyers can also party like it’s 1994: the Rex, in either sedan or hatch form, costs $39,990 – the same as it did 16 years ago.

The car’s reputation, however, is also stuck in the 1990s as far as insurance companies are concerned – expect to spend several hundreds more on a policy compared with rival cars.
