New Car Road Test: Volkswagen Golf GTD

Price and equipment

With Renault’s Sport Megane 175 dCi no longer available and BMW’s 123d Sports hatch costing more than $50,000, the GTD, from $39,290 (plus on-road and dealer costs), stands alone in the lexicon of affordable sporty diesel hatches.

That’s $300 more than you’ll pay to get into the cheapest GTI but the GTD gets five doors standard. If you want the same in GTI-land, you’re looking at $40,490 (plus costs).

Like the GTI, you’re looking at a specification that’s more OK than generous. Dual-zone climate control, auto headlights/wipers, six-CD sound system and 17-inch alloys are included, but if you want sat-nav, Bluetooth or leather — all of which are standard in sporty Mazda 3s of a similar spend — you’ll have to reach for the cheque book. Opting for the dual-clutch auto adds $2500.

The GTD gets the same seven airbags, stability control and maximum five-star NCAP crash rating as other Golf hatches. Less praiseworthy is the lack of standard parking sensors.
