Fair Fight? 2008 BMW M3 Coupe vs. 2008 Audi S5 Coupe

www.edmunds.com Before you start sending us flaming e-mails complaining that a comparison between the 2008 Audi S5 and the 2008 BMW M3 Coupe is an obvious mismatch from the get-go, you should know a few things. Our first full test of the $53000, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 was a bit of a revelation. With a 354-horsepower version of Audi’s direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 under its hood, the voluptuous Audi S5 ran a 13.3-second quarter-mile at 104 mph, just 0.1 second and 2 mph shy of the 420-hp 2007 Audi RS4 sedan. What’s more, the S5′s slalom speed is within a couple mph of the harsh-riding RS-spec sedan. “It ran a 13.3? With that kind of speed, who needs a $67000 RS4?” we asked ourselves.

  1. S5 is to 335i and RS5 is to M3, If they put the lambo V10 in the RS5 instead of a V8 then it would be in competition with the M6

  2. Karadenizpiskopat

2 great cars but audi looks better more sexual

  3. Correction: M3 is to RS4.

  4. S4 is to M3. S5 is not comparable M3. There’s no M5 coupe (yet). And it shouldn’t be compared to M6 either (M6 should be compared to Audi S7 coupe–not released yet). This is silly comparison. The M3 is a smaller and lighter car, more comparable to the S4. The S5 is a great piece of machinery nonetheless.

  5. coolerdude44 – No sir your the moron Audi is made by volkswagon

  6. I had a choice between the S5 and the E92 M3. Went for the S5 with very little doubt because simply, I think the S5 is the superior all-round car. Sure the M3 is a great track car but how many people including myself and all the ////M//// POWER fanboys here are actually going to utilize its potential on the track? And it’s not like the S5 is a slow car at all. It is visually stunning, has a great interior, outstanding quality and is simply much more practical; I need the Quattro where I live.

  7. By that logic all Lamborghinis, Bentleys and Bugattis must be glorified VWs as well. Stupid turd.

  8. I bought mine in Germany…top speed 175 mph on the autoban and still sticks to the road like glue. Awesome power, I have the Eismann exhaust so you can hear the horses under the hood purr. I love it, I can’t say anything for the Audi, I have never driven one, but I know that the Audi S5 cannot even keep up with the BMW 335i on the straight away, so I don’t even need to sweat when I see on in my rear view.

  9. A V8 with 100 hp/L and a 8400rpm redline I am sold

  10. @staceyjones i am, but the coupé is $58,000

  11. I think you are looking at the sedan price not the coupe.

  12. @dvmarko74 you’re a moron. this isn’t acura.

  13. @staceyjones sorry, $55,000. i think they raised the price, a few months ago it was 52.

  14. @staceyjones m3 base price is $52,000…

  15. I’m not sure why some get so hateful, the M3 is faster but the S5 is more elegant, the M3 base price is 63k and the S5 base price is 55k= Buy the one you like, I am on my 4th Audi because I like them.

  16. All Audi’s are are glorified VWs

  17. I believe myself to be not biased (a close relative drives a newer BMW and is happy), and I see Audi and BMW as equals.
the problem with cars is, it’s a bit of a religious war: everyone has his own experiences and knows someone who had trouble with a certain brand of cars etc.
Fact is: There are tons of happy audi-owners, as well as happy bmw-owners and both cars in this video are quite fast, but limited to 250 km/h, the bmw has the bigger engine (~70 hp more), both have nearly identical pricing

  18. It’s perfectly clear to me, that you don’t care about other peoples cars, you don’t have to stress that so much…
Arguments like “most people” and “most magazines” aren’t really convincing: “Most” users of Audis of the same era as mine that you’ll find are quite convinced of its quality and describe the 5-cylinder engines as *bulletproof*. Of course, all these good experiences with audi are with rather old cars, but unless their quality dropped abysmal, their cars still aren’t worse than BMW.

  19. @GangstaDogg21 depends. GT-R

  20. @346L3 When comparing a M3 or even a Infiniti/Acura/Lexus to a Audi is retarded. Lack true quality unless paying a HUGE price. I don’t care how long YOUR audi lasted, many don’t last as long. This is proven by most people, most magazines, and by my experience with my rs4. Nonetheless, you get a slower car for a much bigger price, because they use their “better looking cars” to hide those qualities.

  21. @TheChamp531: Lack of Quality?
I’d call that pure nonsense: I’m driving a 20 year old Audi which has seen about 400.000 km of street, heavy snow and bad roads, yet the only parts that broke are typical expendable items after this long time like suspension springs, timing belts and fan belts… Never had major issues with this car and its engine is just magnificent, still has its first clutch, head gasket etc. and runs like new…

  22. Awesome. Ferrari wins every race vs lamborghini on a race track, because lambos have awd.

  23. The S5 will never be a race car and it will never be good on a race track.
    RWD > AWD
On a race track you need RWD, not AWD.
AWD is good in winter or in slippery roads or in the mountains.
But for that, you can have the 335xi.

  24. The S5 will never beat the M3, nor the 335i on the track.

  25. Obviously I got the point across enough for you to be able to correct me. In other words………..suck my dick

    M//////////POWER!!!!!!!
