This video is applicable to 1997-2003 Malibu, 1999-2005 Grand AM, 1999-2004 Alero, or 1997-1999 Cutlass models. The procedure is basically the same for many front wheel drive front disc brake equipped vehicles.

  1. @strwberry122005 If you car has grease fittings on the ball joints or tie rod ends, usually it’s easier to get at them with the wheels off. On the pads themselves you could use some anti-squeak gel on the outside of the pads, to prevent them from squeaking. Hope this helps you out.

  3. @jodybtree it (the piston) will usually still move, because the cap has a vent, but you may possibly spill some fluid, which isn’t the best thing.

  4. @slay3r956 you want to make sure that the caliper piston is collapsed all of the way into the caliper. If it isn’t then it may make it difficult to get the new pads over the rotor.

  5. hello i just changed a couple of days ago the pads on my malibu first tire (driver side) went fine the second tire when i put everything back the caliper didn;t want to sit well .. i took it out again and used the c clamp again to push it back further apparently it wasn’t needed … but it still didn’t sit well i had to bang in place.. what could of gone wrong? could it of been the pads?

  6. @reddddundance The basics should be similar, but as far as unbolting the calipers, that process may be slightly different.

  8. @supersanchez1991 The brakes on a 2003 Chevy S10 should be different, since it’s not the same type of vehicle.

  10. Also, when he states the bolts securing the caliper bracket are 1/2″, a 13mm socket will fit that clean as well (for those who only have metric toolboxes)!

  14. I changed the brake pads on my gf’s ’05 Malibu and now she says it makes a screacing noise while going under 20 mph. I’m unsure which sides I installed the metal tabbed pads on, would this cause it?

    Also, she says she has to break down harder to come to a complete stop. Does this mean I have to bleed the lines? If so, could you point me in the direction of a guide for that?

  17. I didn’t know you could take off the bracket inside the caliper, so I always had trouble compressing the caliper to get the pads out, now you have saved me quite a headache, thank you for the great video!

  20. why exactly are you pulling against it at 4:08? I have no sound on my computer. Are you disloging it for removal? can i a little clarification? otherwise, everything is very straight forward. thumbs up!

  21. @Travide You could more than likely do that, however I strongly recommend also changing the pads because the old pads may be grooved to your old rotors.

  22. If I am just changing to rotors do I need to push the piston back into the caliper, or can I just take the caliper off, change the rotor, then out the caliper back on with out fooling around with it? I want to keep it simple as I only need rotors done and never done it before

  24. @jodybtree I keep reading this comment to loosen the MC cap. But, when you apply your brakes at every turn, you don’t have to loosen the MC cap. Why would the system be designed so that atmospheric pressure under the cap would affect brake performance? I loosen it routinely, but I often wonder if it is really needed. The tricky thing is to remember to put the cap back on, ha ha.

  25. Here’s a tip, next time bolt on the caliper bracket then insert the pads. Then the caliper. It’s a lot easier and it’ll save a lot of time.
